English as a New Language/ ENL

M.S. 80 is home to almost 240 English Language Learners (ELLs). ELLs account for 34% of our student population and represent at least 15 different home languages.

  • Our priority is to provide our ELLs with opportunities for developing language and 21st Century Skills by using technology.
  • By using technology tools our students are also able to track their learning.
  • Technology tools are aligned to support each students' language proficiency levels. Rosetta Stone is a program that provides students with individualized language support. iReady is also instrumental in engaging students in individualized reading lessons.
  • In addition, our instructional program provides targeted individualized support through student conferencing. The students have the opportunity to set goals using the Fountas and Pinnel Reading levels which are correlated to their Lexile levels. They are also able to track their Lexile levels using the iReady student reports, all on their own.

At M.S.80, we take great pride in the instruction and development of our ELLs. In fact, for the past three years, our 8th grade valedictorians have all been ELL students. Even families/parents are invited to attend our weekend Parent Academy, where they too can receive FREE English Language instruction through Rosetta Stone.
