WHAT MAKES M.S.80 A "TECH" SCHOOL?

Long before the pandemic, each student in our building was receiving an Apple Macbook for use at school during their normal day. This 1:1 student/device ratio is vital to the development of the 21st century skills that each child will need as they venture into futures of higher education and the careers of today. Before graduating from 8th grade and moving on to high school, students who are enrolled at M.S.80 for at least 1 academic year, graduate with a high proficiency in the full range of google suite applications.  Applications include, but are not limited to: Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, Classroom, Meet, Forms & Jamboard. In addition, each class is equipped with audio amplifying technology and two digital smart boards (one for presenting & the other to monitor student tech usage.)

That's not all! In addition to the standard middle school curriculum, students at M.S.80 are exposed to a wide range of technology electives including Aviation (fully loaded, hands on aviation lab), Robotics/Coding and Digital arts/graphic design.

21st CENTURY SKILLS?

Each student who attends M.S.80 graduates with a thorough working knowledge the Google suite of applications such as Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Classroom and Drive.  In addition, students will graduate M.S.80 with at minimum, a functional understanding of aviation, robotics, coding, programming, and the adobe suite of creative apps.

I'VE BEEN TOLD M.S.80 IS A P.B.I.S. SCHOOL. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

P.B.I.S. stands for Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports. This means that we work to create a safe, secure, and supportive school environment in which the focus is to reward positive behavior. Some of the aims are to clearly define and teach behavioral expectations, consistently acknowledge and reward appropriate behavior, constructively address problematic behavior, and effectively use behavioral data to assess progress.

WHAT IS THE "80 CHALLENGE?"

Each year, our students are presented with an academic challenge to achieve 80% mastery for all identified standards in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies through the use of our school’s instructional digital tools.  During the span of the challenge, students are given weekly tasks that vary in difficulty and complexity.  Successful students are richly rewarded for their hard work and dedication, with prize packages. (Previous prize packages have included: VIP lunch, VIP Party, movie theater experience, Broadway shows, Downtown dinner, Awards gala and recognition event, and a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure.)
